Protective Hairstyle: Yarn Faux Locs

Hey Loves,

I am back with another protective hair style ! Remember a while back I talked about how I would be installing faux locs soon as a protective hairstyle? Well I did and as usual I am loving them. This hairstyle normally takes me about a 12 hours to a day to complete depending on the mood I am in. This particular time I spent almost a day doing them (started at 3pm) because of course I had to break to eat, dance and watch movies ! Typical hair day for me ! Anyways I'm loving my hair and thought I would do a quick update on my new protective hairstyle ! I'll be making a couple of youtube videos featuring how I style my faux locs as well as maintenance ! I'll also be sure to put them on the blog as well !!

Being Straight !

So two weeks I ago I straightened my hair. Not so much because I wanted straight hair (I hate my hair straight) but to make it easier to trim/cut my hair. Well I decided to visit a Dominican hair salon because that's where one of my classmates had gotten her hair straightened and her hair came out gorgeous ! Anyways let's just say never ever will I ever ! Ever ! Sit down in any Dominican hair salon again ! Low key might not even sit down at any hair salon ! My problem started when the hair stylist had me under the dryer for what seemed like 3 hours. Then commenced the blow drying and then flat iron. It wasn't so much being under the hair dryer that got me, but the fact that SHE went over each piece of hair about 6 times to get it straight ! -_- ! I felt like yelling out to her that it wasn't going to get any straighter but decided to keep shut. At that point of time, I had already told myself that my hair was damaged and I would have to think of new ways to repair my heat damaged ends ! Long story short- my hair was the straightest it had ever been since I went natural-- and also stayed straight for about a week before I decided to wash it all off- except for the edges on the right side that seemed to be frizzed up. Anyways I prayed to the hair gods to grant me back retention, no heat damaged strands or limp hair and they answered ! Once I finished giving my hair the "oh so special" treatment- it went back to being thick and coarse and I swore off flat ironing my hair forever. Well I think.

Protective Hair Style: The Curly Wig

The winter months are all about protecting your hair as much as you can from the harsh elements of this cruel cruel weather. I'm in Houston so not that cruel, but you get my point. I usually do protective hair styles all year long giving myself breaks in between each style ranging from 1 day to 3 weeks max.  I'm a law school student so I don't have time to continuously do twist outs and Bantu-knots every three days- ain't nobody got time !!!

So I decided to go ahead with a temporary protective hair style where I could take care of my hair every day as well as leave it protected. (I'll do a post later on my take on temporary vs. permanent protective hair styles soon). But moving along, I decide to stop at my local beauty supply store in my hood and pick up some curly hair to make a wig. For some reason- I prefer using curly hair to make wigs then straight hair but I'm opposite when doing sew in's, I know I know so weird.

Well I picked up my hair and was impressed with the curl pattern as well as  the quality of the hair for it not to be superior human hair quality. Below are all the items I used to achieve this look. I hope you guys enjoy !

Deep Conditioner Treatment With Red Palm Oil

My wash days have been all out of wack since I got to Dallas. Soon I'll be back to Houston and back to normality. But Anyway's that's not why I'm here. I declared yesterday wash day because for the last week my hair has been extra dry and adding on top of that I've been sleeping naked aka no bonnet wearing bandit ! Sigh.

Anyways, I knew I needed something that was rich in moisture and would combat my extra dry hair. I found the solution right in my mom's pantry. Red Palm Oil. No, I just did not wake up and decide to put palm oil in my hair. I had researched oils that combat really dry hair and ran across Palm Oil and decided to do some extensive research on it. I was sold.

I added about 1/4 cup of palm oil to my Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Masque Treatment and left it in over night. Bad idea. I turned my pillows orange, but then again if I had not been lazy and washed it out while I was supposed to or better yet added more shower caps then I would've been fine.  But oh how my hair was oh so soft when I stepped in the shower this morning. I felt like maybe, just maybe I had found the solution to my hair being so dry and not retaining as much moisture as it should. As I write this now, My hair is currently drying in plaits using the LOC method. I keep touching my hair to see whether it's going to dry up as it normally does but it seems to be holding up the moisture perfectly. Granted my hair isn't completely 100% dry yet so I don't want to scream Palm Oil as a holy grail product just yet.

I'll keep yall updated once my hair is dry or not on whether this oil right here is a keeper  !

Product Review: Red Palm Oil as Moisturizer

Yes. You read right. For all African readers you all must be like whattttttt? Growing up in a Nigerian household Red Palm Oil was a staple as well as a base dish in many of the things my family cooked. But when I did some research on the actual benefits of Palm Oil for hair I was quite surprised!

Palm Oil is actually great for moisturizing hair. Especially African- American hair which has a tendency to be drier than most (*raises hand and nods head). Besides moisturizing hair, Palm Oil has other great benefits that our can benefit from. It's great to add to a pre-poo, a deep conditioner, leave-in and even to your DIY Whipped Butter mix !

What is Palm Oil?

  • Palm oil is the oil derived from certain palm fruits especially from the palm fruits of West Africa. It is a popular vegetable oil especially used in cooking, baking, cosmetics and cleaning products.

Faux locs: Kinky/Marley Hair vs. Yarn

*update

Hey dolls. I thought I'd make a post on Faux locs as a protective hair style as well as the difference between using kinky/marley hair or yarn locs to achieve them. I tend to switch up my hairstyles frequently, it's a bad habit of mine but all is fair when you know how to do your own hair :) ! I'm also that weird person who thinks of hairstyles months before they actually put it in, like I plan what hairstyle I'm going to do this month and that month. I'm not sure if that's weird or not, but I like to plan my hairstyles according to when I know I have big events coming up, a busy schedule, etc. So, since November I just knew Faux locs were going to be my next protective hair style. I normally do this style once a year with yarn but this time I started contemplating doing them with Marley hair. They seem to look a little more realistic then using yarn to wrap the hair. But then 4 days ago when I completed a Faux loc set on my mother using Marley hair, my mind changed. Again. Safe to say I'll be using my trusted yarn to complete this hair style once again and here's why. I also give the pro's and con's of using kinky/marley hair or yarn to complete this look. One day I'll do a Faux loc set using Kinky hair but not this time around.
