Part 1: Making the Transition from Relaxed to Natural Hair

Lately I've been getting a lot of questions from my friends and friends of friends on how to take care of hair and going natural. Im so excited that more women are on the quest to achieving healthy hair- natural or not & also embracing their natural hair.

This post will address the transition from relaxed to natural hair. The first thing you need to keep in mind when embarking on this journey is that it is not going to be an easy one. You are not going to get results overnight. You need to be patient and kind to your hair, but also get to know your hair. Building a relationship with your hair during this process is one of the first steps during this transition process.

Make sure this is something you want to do. Like really want to do for real for reals. Many people go through this process because they think this is the easiest/fastest way to achieve long hair - only to go back to the creamy crack months in ! So make sure you are dedicated to the cause. Don't listen to the naysayers and try to connect with friends or family who have gone or are natural for support and guidance.

Your hair is your hair. Not mine, or your mothers, or the lady down the block with the big curly afro. Your hair is your hair and you need to learn how to embrace it through the goods and the bads. Once you learn the texture of your hair and what it likes and does not like, your good hair days will outweigh the bad.

You should start or develop a simple hair regime that is tailored to your needs. Watching youtube video's are a good start, but you should also remember a lot of the women you see may have different hair textures, so what works for them may not work for you.

Finally, start experimenting with hairstyles that will make your transition easier. Some hairstyles I personally recommend include FULL weave sew in's, braids, twists, or any other style which includes minimum manipulation without the use of heat.

Check Part 2 where I go in depth with the Do's and Don'ts as well as other helpful tips for making the transition !
