The Winter Hair Series: Building the Perfect Hair Regimen Part I

Even here in Dallas, we're exposed to cold weather which doesn't quite agree with out hair. Most likely if you live in an area with cold climates you will need to change your hair care regimen to keep your hair moisturized during these winter months. So if you don't already have one, now is the time to build the perfect winter hair care regimen so  you'll be able to achieve maximum for your health until the good weather kicks back in again.

BUILDING THE PERFECT HAIR REGIMEN STARTER PACK

1. Pre-poo Oil- I recommend using heavier oils such as Castor or Olive Oil to pre-poo or do your hot oil or oil rinsing treatments as these oils are much thicker and will seal your hair better than lighter oils such as coconut oil which may leave hair feeling hard and not as moisturized.

2. The base of your starter pack should include a sulfate free shampoo that you should use on your hair no more than 2 times a month or when you take out your hair styles. You should stay away from harsh cleansers and should clarify your hair less during these cold months.

3. Thick Deep Conditioners - I strongly recommend buying a deep conditioner that is weighted (thick) so that it will be able to penetrate your hair shaft while still leaving your hair feeling moisturized after the rinse out.

4. Protein Treatments- I think it's wise to keep your favorite protein treatment on hand to use at least once every 6-8 weeks on your stands. This way you can make sure you are re-strengthening and reconstructing your hair and getting it ready for spring and summer !

5. Leave In- Conditioners- Make sure you have a cream leave in moisturizer on deck. I love using water based spray conditioners on my hair but this may not be enough if you live in harsh winter environments. You can follow up your favorite spray leave in with a cream based leave -in like I do, or simply just use a heavier cream leave in. This way you are giving your hair the added moisture it needs before you seal with your oils and butters.

6. Cream Based Moisturizer- I' m specifically referencing water based moisturizers. Having a water based moisturizer to use on your hair is a must anytime of the year but more importantly during the winter !

7. Butters/Thick Oils- Butters are more ideal for the winter because they are way thicker than their oil counter parts. When you seal with butter properly you can easily go 2-3 days before reapplying some moisture. Butters such as cocoa butter, mango butter, avocado or shea butter are ideal as well as thick oils such as Olive Oil or Castor oil.
